One of the best kept secrets around. U-picks are a great way to enjoy the freshest fruits without having to grow the trees or bushes yourself. There's something about climbing a tree and plucking off little dark drops of goodness makes you feel alive. At Stovers' farm there are several varieties of cherries including many heirlooms no longer available on the mass market.

Buying cherries from the store is such a gamble. The best ones are good, but you get the occasional rotten cherry that's terrible! At Stovers U-pick farm every one picked is super tasty! And the best of the best were the Hedelfingens. Deliciously juicy and sweet, I could eat them all day.

picking first blackberries

Left: 2nd Place winner - blackberries. One of the hardest crops to transport because they are so fragile. They are best freshly picked from the bush.

The thornless varieties at Stovers were good, firm, and tart. But I grew up on the wild bushes of South Carolina with their vicious thorns and sweet, juicy berries. So if I had my choice of fresh blackberries, I would choose wild southern bushes, scratches and all.

However, in Natasha's pies and cobblers the thornless blackberries (combined with blueberries and raspberries) were fantastic! My mouth is watering thinking about it. Hmmmhh, tasty.
