Rain lilies combine the best traits of crocuses, bunch alliums, and species daffodils. In addition, they can bloom intermittently throughout the warmer months. The entire genera is underused in America gardens.

Z. flavissima is an outstanding member of the group. I bought this plant from California in 2003. From a few bulbs then, there are hundreds now in several containers. They bloom profusely after every hard rain. Between rains they require no maintenance at all.

The daffodil-yellow flowers glisten in the sunshine, and have come to symbolize summer.

z grandiflora quartet

Left: 2nd Place winner - Z. grandiflora: large flowered rain lily. This quartet has flowers over 3" across.

This is first rain lily I grew. The pink flowers are the largest in the genera, but not the most floriferous. Re-bloom is common but not as frequent as with Z. flavissima.

This is probably the most common rain lily available for retail. Search bulb catalogs, websites, and societies for other species and cultivars.
