It's hard to believe a paperwhite could win best daffodil, but then it's hard to believe paperwhites could perform as well as these did at Esther's house. Galilee paperwhites literally bloomed for two months during the mild Spartanburg winter. The strong perfume wafted throughout the yard over to the neighbors and even reached the street. As you walked up, you could smell 'em well before you saw 'em.

They were so incredible and floriferous that Esther thought they were hyacinths. I just asked her about them yesterday and she was ready to argue with me that they those white flowers were "hyacinths not daffodils." I still don't know if she believes me.

They may not perennialize well. (A cold snap this year killed the flower buds.) But in warm climates Galilee is worth planting every year.

This daffodil looks like a Division 9 Poeticus variety. The tiny cup with the reddish rim and the somewhat twisted, pure white, notched petals of the corona hint towards Poeticus.

This old variety blooms well in moist soil and deciduous shade. New cultivars, like Quail and Barrett Browning, are great plants for most any garden. But take time to look for some older heirlooms too. They can be surprisingly charming.
