Ornamental trees are becoming my favorite class of plant (surpassing perennials). And cherry trees are at the head of the class. Kwanzan cherry is a horticultural wonder. The double pink flowers cover the branches like puffy cotton candy. Commissioner Benepe and the NY Park District have used Kwanzan cherries to light up Manhattan parks in early spring.

Cherries and apples have ornamental advantages. Most rose family members bloom before the foliage fully develops, giving an unobscured view of the spring show.

Because of their cultural history, Yoshino cherries must also be mentioned. From Tokyo to Washington DC to Spartanburg they offer some of the best displays on the planet.

This underrated sibling of the French lilacs blooms from late spring to early summer. The racemes are not as fragrant but the hundreds of tiny, creamy flowers per raceme give it a uniquely fluffy appearance.

Other great woody ornamentals from 2008 include star magnolia and spirea.
