An Early Taste of Spring
Although this has been a moderate winter (by Chicago standards), I am ready for spring. I want to see a lush green canopy, smell the sweet spring air, and feel the spongy earth beneath my feet. But it is only mid February. The trees are leafless; the air is cold; and the ground is solidly frozen. Fortunately, my cold frame provides me with greenery and life during this otherwise drab and dreary time.

Greenology: Greenway Grazing
I read about urban grazing in an old magazine. During WW1 President Wilson replaced the expensive White House lawn equipment with a flock of sheep. The proceeds from the wool went to local charities. Being green, saving green, and making green: the trifecta! Read more |

Cold Frame Keeps 'em Bloomin'
Seed packs are already availbale in stores. Check out this video for expert tips and advice for getting starting.
Cold Frame Keeps 'em Bloomin'
When the sun shines, temps in the cold frame can be 30 degrees warmer than outside temps. My cold frame is so well insulated and protected that even when temps outside reach single digits , the lowest temp inside the cold frame has been 27F. This equates to USDA zone 9. (However, zone 9 does not have as many freezing days, so it is probably closer to zone 7 if you factor in lowest temps and number of freezing days.) This explains why my hellebore is blooming so big and full and all the bulbs are poking up their noses.
